Storm King: 500 Acres of Giant Sculpture, One Hour From Bergen County

Oversized abstract sculptures spread across rolling autumn hills at Storm King Art Center in the Hudson Valley

Most outdoor art is a bench with a plaque on it, and you have to read the plaque to be impressed, and you are lying if you say you did. Storm King Art Center is not that. It is 500 acres of rolling Hudson Valley hills covered in sculptures big enough to walk inside, and in late October it is the rare place where the art and the foliage are competing for your attention and both are winning.

It is also, quietly, one of the best excuses to drive an hour north and pretend the whole trip was about culture.

Getting There

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Take the Palisades Parkway north and cross the Bear Mountain Bridge, then follow Route 9W — the entrance is at 1 Museum Road, New Windsor, NY. The park is open Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed Tuesdays. Buy a timed ticket before you drive — walk-up entry is genuinely limited in fall, and weekend adult tickets run $28, weekday $25.

What to Explore

This year's headline shows — including Anicka Yi's Message from the Mud — run through November 9, and the season itself closes for winter not long after, so this is the window. Rent one of the bikes at the gate or take the tram loop and hop off at the pieces you actually want. Do not try to walk all 500 acres; the lawn looks flat and is not, and there is nothing sadder than a person limping back to a sculpture they have decided not to enjoy anymore.

The ride up the Palisades and across the Bear Mountain bridge is half the experience — the kind of drive where you want the panoramic roof open even in October, with a thermos in the cupholder. There is a food truck, but the Hudson River wind has strong opinions about sitting outside for long, and none of them are flattering.
