Six Flags Fright Fest: Nine Haunted Mazes Through November 1
By late October, the scariest thing in most of New Jersey is not a haunted house — it is the line to get into the haunted house. Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson runs the biggest one in the state, and this year it is open later than you think: Fright Fest runs select nights through November 1, so the whole operation does not evaporate the second the last trick-or-treater goes to bed.
The trick to enjoying Fright Fest is the same as the trick to surviving a horror movie: do the scary part early, while you still have daylight and dignity. Here is the plan.
Getting There
About 1 hour 15 minutes from Bergen County. The park is at 1 Six Flags Boulevard, Jackson — down the Turnpike to I-195 east, and follow the signs. Parking is paid, so have a card ready; the whole park is cashless.
Nine Mazes, Five Scare Zones, One Scream
What to explore: the lineup is built around names you already know — JASON: Blood Reign, The Conjuring Universe, Army of the Dead, Final Destination: Death's Playground — plus five scare zones that turn the walk between rides into part of the show. The mazes need a separate Haunted Attractions Pass on top of admission, so budget for it: a night pass runs around $35 on top of your ticket, and it sells out on the nights you actually want to go.
Timing Is the Whole Game
Do the mazes first. The scare zones genuinely get better after dark, but the maze lines are shortest at open, and there is a direct relationship between how long you wait in line and how much you want to go home and look at a wall. Skip Saturday if you can. Friday and Sunday nights are dramatically calmer, which is the difference between “spooky” and “crowded enough that nothing is scary anymore.” Leave the white sneakers at home; the fog machines do not take the night off.
Do not be the person who discovers they are too spooked to drive. Sort that out in the parking lot at 6 p.m., not at midnight with the fog still on your jacket.
