Grounds for Sculpture: A 42-Acre Outdoor Museum in Hamilton
Somewhere in Hamilton, New Jersey, there is a sculpture of a picnic that you are allowed to sit down in the middle of, surrounded by recreations of famous paintings rendered in three dimensions and a peacock that has decided it owns the path. Grounds for Sculpture is 42 acres of this — a former fairground turned outdoor museum — and it is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in the middle of the state, which is a sentence nobody expected to be true.
Getting There
About 1 hour 15 minutes. Take the Turnpike south to I-295 and get off for Hamilton — the park is at 80 Sculptors Way, Hamilton Township, open Wednesday through Monday, closed Tuesdays. Timed tickets are recommended on weekends.
What to Explore
More than 270 works spread across gardens, ponds and paths, with peacocks wandering through like they have a stake in the place (they do). The crowd favorite is the series by founder Seward Johnson that recreates Impressionist paintings — Monet and Manet — as life-size, walk-through scenes. You can literally step into the painting, which is the closest most of us will get to being in a museum and a garden at the same time without being told to get off the grass. The on-site restaurant, Rat's, is genuinely good and not cheap — book a table if you want to feel slightly fancy about a place named after a rat.
This is a walking museum — comfortable shoes, a light jacket, and an afternoon are the requirements. Central Jersey gets a bad rap for being a place you drive through; this is the strongest argument that it is a place you should stop, get out, and wander around for a few hours.
