The Leaves Were Peaking, and So Was the Panoramic Roof

There is a version of the fall foliage trip that everybody knows: you drive somewhere scenic, you park, you get out, you look at the hills, you take a picture, you drive home. It is a fine trip. It is also missing the part that actually stays with you, which happens to be the part you do from inside the car.

Because the color on the Hudson in October is not one thing. It is a wall of red and orange rising off both banks of the river, and it is also the last light of a short afternoon coming through the trees at an angle, and it is the way the whole road goes golden for about twenty minutes before the sun drops. The best seat for all of that is not the pull-off at the top of the hill. It is the passenger seat, moving, with a roof you can see through.

The Road That Does the Work for You

We took the 2026 Tesla Model Y up Route 9W, the old river road that runs north along the Hudson through Storm King and up past West Point, and it is the kind of drive that reminds you why people invented the word "scenic." The road climbs, drops, and swings with the river, and the leaves do the rest. At peak there are stretches where the canopy closes over the road entirely, and for a minute the car is driving through a tunnel made of color.

In most vehicles, that overhead color is something you catch through a windshield and the top of the side windows, in fragments. In the Model Y, the panoramic glass roof turns the whole ceiling into a window. You look up — not while driving, obviously, but as a passenger — and the entire canopy is there, moving. It is the difference between watching a view through a letterbox and standing in the middle of it.

Quiet Is a Feature on a Drive Like This

Here is the thing nobody puts in the brochure but everyone feels after an hour: a fall drive is a quiet activity. You are not going anywhere urgent. You are there for the color and the air and the feeling of the season, and all of that is improved by a car that does not fill the cabin with engine noise. The Model Y is electric, which means the loudest thing on the drive was the gravel under the tires at the one pull-off we actually stopped at.

It also meant the whole afternoon cost almost nothing to run. You do the math on a hundred miles of river road and the number is the kind of thing that makes you want to do it again the next weekend, which is really the whole review in one sentence.

The Pull-Off, Eventually

We did stop, because you have to. There is a lookout above Storm King where the river bends and the far hillside lights up all at once, and standing there with the wind and the color and a cup of coffee is worth the whole drive. But the honest truth is that the best moment of the day was the drive back, when the sun went down behind the ridge and the roof went from red to purple to black, and the road unwound ahead of us in silence.

You go up the Hudson for the hills. You remember the ceiling. Bring a car with a glass roof and a quiet motor, and you get both at once.
