Dodge Poetry Festival at NJPAC: Three Days of Spoken Word

A poet performing spoken word on stage at the Dodge Poetry Festival at NJPAC

The Dodge Poetry Festival is one of the largest poetry events in the country, and this fall it sets up at NJPAC in Newark for a multi-day celebration of spoken word and live poetry, running October 15 through 17. If the word “poetry” makes you think of a classroom, this is the event that fixes that.

Live poetry is a performance art, not a reading. Poets on a big stage bring rhythm and presence that does not exist on the page, and a festival format means you can drift between voices and styles until something grabs you. This year's lineup runs deep — from Patti Smith in a rare one-off set to U.S. Poet Laureate Arthur Sze and a long list of the country's best working poets.

Three Days, So Go Once or Twice

Because it runs across three days, you can treat it as a single evening or a full weekend. A one-night trip is easy — Newark is about 20 to 25 minutes from Bergen County, and NJPAC's attached parking deck makes the logistics painless. If you want to go deep, a second night costs you another short drive and another walk across the same lot. A three-day pass covers the main programming, while a few headline events are ticketed separately.

Make an Evening of It

NJPAC sits at the edge of the Ironbound, which means you are minutes from some of the best food in the state. Dinner in the Ironbound, then a night of poetry, is a date night or a friends night that reads as far more interesting than the usual restaurant-and-a-movie default. Park once, eat, walk over, and you have a genuinely grown-up evening.

The Car Part

Three days of events means a few drives — or fewer, if you are smart about it. If you are going with a group, one vehicle and one parking fee is the easy call, and a car ride is where you actually talk about what you just heard. For a festival weekend, something spacious and electric fits the mood — quiet on the way in, room for the crew, and no gas stop on a loop you will be running more than once.

Grab the crew, pick a night — or two — and let someone else navigate Route 21.

Your Ride to the Show

One vehicle, one parking fee, and everyone gets home in the same car. Grab a three-row for the crew, or something electric for the quiet ride home.
