Dia Beacon: Richard Serra's Steel Curves in a 1929 Nabisco Factory
There are rooms at Dia Beacon that feel less like art and more like weather — Richard Serra's Torqued Ellipses are curved walls of rusted steel big enough to walk inside, and standing in the middle of one does something to your inner ear that no flat screen can replicate. The fact that all of it lives inside a converted 1929 Nabisco box-printing factory is the second-best thing about it, right after the part where you get to walk inside a giant rusted steel curve.
You do not need to “get” contemporary art to enjoy this place. You just need to be willing to stand next to something the size of a house and feel small for a minute.
Getting There
About 1 hour 15 minutes. Take the Palisades Parkway north and the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge across the Hudson — the museum is at 3 Beekman Street, Beacon, a ten-minute walk from the Metro-North station. It is open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Adult admission runs about $20.
What to Explore
Inside: Serra's steel curves, Dan Flavin's neon, Michael Heizer, and an Agnes Martin retrospective that has been the talk of 2026. Half of it is the size of a house and the other half glows, which is why it is the rare art museum where kids do not immediately start asking to leave. Then walk Beacon itself — coffee, record shops, a couple of restaurants, and the river at the bottom of the hill — and drive home along the water when the light is low and everyone is pretending to have a favorite artist.
It is a reminder that you do not have to cross a bridge into the city to see world-class art — you just have to go north instead of east, which is also the direction the traffic is not.
