Chris Tucker at NJPAC: The Comedy Show Worth the Drive to Newark
Most people know Chris Tucker from Friday and the Rush Hour movies, where he spent two hours talking faster than anyone else in the room. On Friday, October 2, he brings that same energy to Prudential Hall at NJPAC in Newark for a live stand-up set, and it is the rare comedy night that is genuinely worth the drive.
Tucker is one of those comics who fills a theater the way most performers fill a club. If you have only ever seen him on a screen, a live set is a different animal entirely — looser, faster, and more unpredictable in the best way. He has sold out Prudential Hall before, and this show has the same feel to it.
The Show, and the Phone Rule
Doors open for an 8:00 p.m. show, and it is worth knowing up front that this is a phone-free event — your phone gets locked in a sealed pouch when you arrive and you get it back on the way out. That is a feature, not a bug. A comedy show is better when nobody is holding up a screen, and you will actually watch the set instead of documenting it.

The Drive From Bergen County
Newark is closer than most people in North Jersey give it credit for. From Hackensack or Fort Lee you are looking at roughly 20 to 25 minutes on a clean run — straight down Route 21 or the Turnpike. There is no bridge toll on your side of the river, and the approach into NJPAC is well signed.
The one thing to plan for is traffic on a Friday evening. The show is a night event, which means you are driving toward Newark during the tail end of rush hour. Leave an extra twenty minutes and the whole stress disappears; leave on time and you will spend the first two comics' worth of your evening staring at brake lights.
Parking at NJPAC
NJPAC has its own attached parking deck on Mulberry Street, and it is the obvious choice — indoor, well lit, and a short walk from your seat. It fills up on big nights, so arrive early enough to get a spot on a lower level and avoid the post-show elevator line. If the deck is full, the Military Park garage and several surface lots are a block or two away, and rates run roughly $15 to $28 on a show night.
One small thing: after a show lets out, every car in the deck tries to leave at once. Stay in your seat through the encore, take your time on the way out, and the line will have mostly cleared by the time you reach your car.
Make a Night of It
You are a few minutes from the Ironbound, Newark's Portuguese neighborhood, and it is the single best reason to make this a whole evening instead of a drive-and-dash. Dinner on Ferry Street — rodizio, or a plate of anything with garlic and olive oil — before a comedy show is about as good as a Friday gets. Park once, walk to dinner, walk to the theater, and the night handles itself.
The Car Part
Comedy is a group event. Four people laughing in the same car on the way home is half the fun, and one vehicle means one parking fee and one designated driver. For a city show like this, a smaller, efficient car is the smart play — it is easy to thread through Newark streets, simple to park, and cheap to run there and back.
Grab dinner, grab the show, and let someone else do the driving. That is the whole play.
Your Ride to the Show
One vehicle, one parking fee, and everyone gets home in the same car. Grab a three-row for the crew, or something electric for the quiet ride home.
